4. Cryptic Crosswords -Remove a bit

For Blaugust this year I decided to publish a series of cryptic crossword posts.
I'm aiming for one a day. Unfortunately for some of the time I will be camping, so I hope to manage this, but it might get a bit tricky if I have no internet access.

Many of our friends over the years have said that cryptic crosswords don't make sense. They certainly do play with your mind, and that is why I take delight in them.  I love the surprising discovery inside a puzzle and the challenge of twisting the usual thought patterns and making them do something different.

So here is today's offering...

Sometimes you have to remove some letters from one word (or phrase) to give you the one you are looking for.

Uncoiled tangle , leaving one less confused (5  ) -the Advertiser Jan 2016
In this case "leaving" is the indicator.
The letters from "one" need to be taken out of the word "uncoiled."
Then they need to be reformed (tangled) to make a word which means "less confused".
In this case the answer was lucid.

Rise and fall with fraudulent dealings behind father's back (8) Advertiser 8/2/16
Rise and fall is the straight clue
Dealings is an indicator that you need to work on an anagram
Behind father's back means you only use the bit behind father
Father =fr, so remove the fr from the front of fraudulent
Take audulent and turn it around to make something that means rise and fall
Yep, you've got it...undulate!

Revise chapter with the most rage Advertiser 5/3/16
Revise is the straight clue
"Chapter" is chargeable
"Most rage" is most of anger =ange
Revise =change

Indicators for this sort of cryptic action include:
  • loses
  • leaving
  • Behind
