Red Centre day 4 , July 24th Arckaringa HS to Owen Springs

Day 4 July 24th-606km

We moved out reasonably early from our little creek campsite. First stop was Cadney Park, as we entered the highway from the side road. We had remembered Cadney Park as a welcoming spot along the highway, and it still had its warm wooden walls in the dining area, which do feel good, but the gentleman in the till, who took our payment for fuel at 161.9c/l (!!!) quite taciturn, and the loos were pretty dirty.

We basically cached our way up the highway today, with a stop every now and then at a roadside stop or township to break up the trip.

We stopped on the highway at Marla for a few minutes, then at the NT/SA border , Kulgera, Erldunda (more fuel).

We stopped in to the Henbury Meteorite Craters (15 km in on the Ernest Giles rd) because we had never seen them. I have to say we were reasonably impressed. We went for the 1.2km walk out to , and around the edge of the 4 massive craters, created when a meteor broke up and crashed there. Although they were about the size of a 200 litre (44 gallon) drum, the 4 fragments created these craters up to 15m deep and about of various diameters (around 100m). It's pretty impressive that they hit with this sort of force, and we feel happy that shooting stars usually burn up in our atmosphere instead of making it to earth. A scary thought!

We travelled on, stopping briefly at the memorial to 4 people who out their lives in the Cannon Ball run race from Darwin to Alice Springs

Camped in Owen Springs Reserve in a lovely spot by a dry creek bed with a great fire.
