Walking Mount Gawler 17/9/19

Seven enthusiastic walkers met by Gate 14 on Bagshaw Rd at Kersbrook to walk in the Mount Gawler area and were ably led by Craig and Bev.

It was a cool morning, but already showing signs of being a lovely sunny day - perfect for a stroll.

This area was extensively burned in the Samson Flat bushfire , four and a half years ago, and is showing all the thick regrowth that you would expect. it is probably the first season that the young wattles are flowering and we were in for treat.

At times it was hard to see into the scrub on the side of the track due to the thick flowering plants.
It didn't take too many hills before we thought we might stop and remove a layer or two.

you can see the burnt remains behind the new growth in this picture.

sunlight through new growth was wonderful

we saw a number of different orchids on the walk.. This pair of white ones was on the side of the track just near our morning tea spot.

as we crested one hill we were met with this delightful sight.  Green and gold! (and in the background the newly felled areas still a raw brown area)

what a treat

It was donkey heaven in some spots.

How many of you know that lovely little song about the little donkey??
I had to look up the words. The first verse goes like this-:
"Little donkey, little donkey on the dusty road
Got to keep on plodding onwards with your precious load
Been a long time, little donkey, through the winters night
don't give up now, little donkey,
Bethlehems in sight"
..... Well, the first couple of lines seemed to fit OK on the day. They were going round and round in my head as we strolled along . I figured my lunch was a precious load that I was carrying....

These were amongst a bunch of about 20 flowers on the side of the track fairly close to Mount Gawler itself.  I thought it was interesting to see what the bud looks like.

narrow track

fantastic views

As I watched Bob in quiet reflection at our lunch spot  I realised what he reminded me of

McCubbin's "Down on his luck" !!!
What do you think?

couldn't resist including this one.
And then off to the Cuddlee Cafe for some well earned refreshment (plus a bit more)

Despite the cool breeze we sat outside and took the chance to inspect some of their functional artwork.  This is used for a fire in the colder weather and is really very creatively styled.

Another great way to spend a good portion of our day with interesting people in a beautiful spot.
Thanks Craig and Bev

  3. Hi Erica
Just got back from work & read your fabulous blurb. You should be a journalist - you've got a flair for writing & the great photos provide the icing on the cake.
I hope Bob wasn't worrying about the sale of his home :(
    Wish I'd been there.

  4. Thank you Erica. What a time of the year to be out there and you have captured the best of it including the great company. That cluster of orchids and the wattles were stunning. Your blogs of our walks are wonderful to share. Yes, the contour map nearly gave me a late-onset coronary and Graham did grade the walk as a 7 out of ten which is probably not a bad way to grade walks but I don't know how that fits in with the A,B and C grades.
    Thanks again, Craig.

  6. I do agree, the blog is a wonderful way to share the walks. I would so loved to have done this walk and others. However, rental property requirements have been somewhat time consuming. Therefore able to begin joining the walks from next week. The maps are great to look at as well. See you all next week. Joanne.
